Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Star Sets Aside His Ego Outside.
A single omission was enough. Another and it would have started to look spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is much too clever not to realize that winning the World Cup is probably going to require contributions by the talented midfielder, although it is also up to the player to adapt to the game plans and team pecking order necessary with the national team now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.
The manager seeks the player's competitive fire, his fire, but it is a matter of using it constructively. Individual quality counts but the squad know from bitter experience that there is a price to pay when fame takes over. Nevertheless, a point has been made.
The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after being left out of the previous squad. He watched England qualify at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He heard the coach discuss valuing the team's dynamism and values. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in top form, finding the back of the net for his club versus their rivals and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; another omission would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.
The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham directed towards pressuring the opposition rather than teammates. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to starting a conflict with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has demonstrated that an international career is a precious, uncertain thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now offer support around the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is willing to drop big names.
“There is no problem with him, there is no problem about his personality,” the German stated. “Jude possesses a competitive streak. It takes that kind of fire to reach the heights that he reached. Everyone need to help him and create a atmosphere which he can channel this edge in matches and towards the goals we are building as a team.”
Bellingham took up most of the attention at the manager's selection reveal for this month’s meaningless matches versus Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, what about Phil Foden? Here is another prodigious playmaker in need of love and guidance. Foden has been absent for the national team since March and has struggled to perform well recently but Tuchel was impressed by the 25-year-old after his display in Manchester City’s win versus Borussia Dortmund recently.
The issue, though, is how to use the attacking talents at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be a strong case to select another youngster once he overcomes a ongoing injury. Is selecting multiple creators to the World Cup be excessive? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at Euro 2024. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, restricting Harry Kane’s style as a result.
It is hard to see the current manager making the same mistake if it harms the offensive structure. Space exists for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the wings. Clear roles helps. Bellingham is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be central. Tuchel prefers him close to Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘You are needed in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “He will play in the central attacking zone, through the center. I have this idea regarding him for a long time. I think it suits him the most.”
Tuchel conceded there are occasions when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy for the game, then obviously something is not right, whether it's his role, the environment, it's unclear.
“I think he is additionally so used to playing for his club in a particular setup, to have a defined role. I think he profits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”
Tuchel talked about Bellingham bursting through for easy finishes and the other netting goals from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, James Trafford and the midfielder have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his good displays for Manchester City at defense. Interest is high.
The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, he hinted at using Foden as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives if he be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for trying new things.
At the same time, it is also a chance to foster the understanding with Bellingham flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to the latter assisting the captain to net in an international match versus the Scots in September 2023 to find the one and only time in many appearances for England when the pair combined for a score. Tuchel will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“At this point eventually it falls to the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. There is still a feeling of Bellingham under scrutiny. He may not be assured to begin versus the upcoming opponents. Tuchel desires him committed but he will be watching him carefully. Leave the ego outside. It will make a powerful England team into an even better one.
