Texas Attorney General Sues Acetaminophen Manufacturers Regarding Autism Assertions

Courtroom Proceedings
The Texas Attorney General, who supports former President Trump campaigning for US Senate, accused pharmaceutical manufacturers of concealing the risks of acetaminophen

Texas Attorney General Paxton is suing the manufacturers of acetaminophen, alleging the corporations hid safety concerns that the drug presented to pediatric cognitive development.

The lawsuit comes thirty days after Donald Trump publicized an unproven link between consuming Tylenol - referred to as acetaminophen - while pregnant and autism in children.

Paxton is suing Johnson & Johnson, which previously sold the medication, the sole analgesic recommended for expectant mothers, and the current manufacturer, which now manufacturers it.

In a statement, he said they "misled consumers by profiting off of discomfort and promoting medication ignoring the potential hazards."

The manufacturer asserts there is insufficient reliable data tying acetaminophen to autism.

"These corporations lied for decades, intentionally threatening countless individuals to boost earnings," the attorney general, a Republican, stated.

Kenvue said in a statement that it was "deeply concerned by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the security of paracetamol and the likely effects that could have on the health of US mothers and children."

On its official site, Kenvue also mentioned it had "consistently assessed the relevant science and there is no credible data that indicates a proven link between consuming paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder."

Associations representing doctors and healthcare providers share this view.

The leading OB-GYN organization has declared paracetamol - the primary component in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for pregnant women to treat pain and elevated temperature, which can create significant medical dangers if left untreated.

"In multiple decades of studies on the use of paracetamol in gestation, not a single reputable study has successfully concluded that the consumption of paracetamol in any stage of gestation causes neurological conditions in young ones," the organization said.

This legal action references current declarations from the former administration in claiming the drug is reportedly hazardous.

In recent weeks, the former president raised alarms from public health officials when he told expectant mothers to "struggle intensely" not to consume Tylenol when ill.

The FDA then released a statement that medical professionals should contemplate reducing the usage of acetaminophen, while also stating that "a proven link" between the drug and autism spectrum disorder in minors has remains unverified.

The Health Department head Kennedy, who oversees the FDA, had promised in spring to undertake "comprehensive study program" that would determine the cause of autism in a limited time.

But experts warned that discovering a unique factor of autism - considered by experts to be the consequence of a complex mix of genetic and external influences - would be difficult.

Autism spectrum disorder is a form of lifelong neurodivergence and impairment that impacts how people perceive and engage with the surroundings, and is recognized using doctors' observations.

In his legal document, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is running for US Senate - alleges Kenvue and J&J "deliberately disregarded and tried to quiet the research" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

The case seeks to make the companies "remove any commercial messaging" that asserts Tylenol is reliable for pregnant women.

The court case mirrors the complaints of a assembly of guardians of children with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who took legal action against the manufacturers of Tylenol in recently.

Judicial authorities threw out the lawsuit, declaring investigations from the parents' expert witnesses was lacking definitive proof.
