Rob Edwards along with O'Neil represent the early candidates under consideration to replace the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday after the squad's 10-match winless start to the top-flight campaign.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic links to the team - are among the names to be considered by the Wolves leadership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a possible hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.
