We are verifying images and video circulated earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to check the location of where the pictures originated was based on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
