'Living a Nightmare': Families of Unaccounted For Young People Desperately Seek News After Ski Resort Fire
The relatives of teenagers lost after a deadly fire at a venue in a Switzerland's winter destination are facing an excruciating wait for confirmed information and pleading for any details about their loved ones publicly.
The blaze devastated the Le Constellation bar in the alpine resort, located in the Swiss Alps of the Valais region, in the middle of the night of New Year's Day. Circulated video show the roof structure being engulfed in flames as bottles with fireworks are held aloft.
Officials have stated that it could take an extended period to identify the victims of the tragedy, which killed four dozen individuals and hurt another over a hundred. Officials stated on Friday that the majority of the injured have been accounted for, with the process ongoing to name the final individuals.
In the waiting period, families and friends have been taking to the internet to plead for information about their loved ones who were present at the venue that evening.
Desperate Searches for the Unaccounted For
The whereabouts of teenager from Switzerland Arthur Brodard, sixteen, are not yet determined, according to an appeal from his parent.
The resident of Lutry near the city, told a local newspaper that she had returned to the city to check whether he was in the medical facility, while his other parent did the equivalent search in the capital, but could not find him.
"I'm living a nightmare, a horror. Either I find my son in the morgue, or I find him in a serious state. It's horrific," she said.
She explained that some of his friends had been located with injuries covering nearly half their bodies. "It's unspeakable; they went through a terrifying ordeal."
The Italian foreign ministry has said that six of its citizens are still unaccounted for.
One of those is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage junior golfer, originally from Italy but now living in Dubai.
The Italian Golf Federation has stated that he is dead, without mentioning the fire, honoring a "young athlete who carried with him dedication and authentic values."
His father, reportedly stated that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around the new year. An representative has stated that a official announcement of his death is awaited.
Other Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, 16, is also among the missing. His mother explained that he had been on vacation but had gone out with a group and found himself at the bar.
"Someone with him told me they escaped after the fire broke out and that he had his phone with him, but then at a certain point he they were separated," she explained, adding he had been wearing a distinctive piece of jewelry.
One of his teachers stated, "He was known for his good nature and smile, combined with great maturity. Often ask if help out."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Swiss and Greek citizenship but lives full-time in Switzerland, was also present on New Year's Eve, according to sources.
Her sibling has posted an appeal online, saying the family has had "no information" regarding the 15-year-old or the group she was with, who are also unaccounted for.
Consular authorities from her country of origin say they are closely watching the developments.
