NBA game action

Miami recorded 86 first-half scores versus the Grizzlies

The Heat secured a overwhelming 146 to 114 victory against the Grizzlies in their first NBA game after guard Terry Rozier was detained for suspected unlawful sports betting.

Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained in connection with a sweeping federal probe into illegal gambling. Both men deny the claims.

But, the Heat were focused as they scored eighty-six opening half scores to lead Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year history.

Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and afterwards said Rozier had the team's full backing.

"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is somebody who is very dear to everyone. He has made a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces this."

Portland additionally won their first game after the arrests, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and leading the squad to a decisive 139-119 victory against the Golden State Warriors.

"We all had positive times with Chauncey and his coaching style," Tiago remarked. "We're thinking of him and his family but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' by Recent Events

Addressing the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.

"Nothing is more critical to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

The commissioner also mentioned an league probe into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the authorities and the gambling firms," he added.

"We investigated that situation and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the league office is unable to.

"So, we've been cooperating from that point. Naturally, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.

"And two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
